The recovery book suzanne young7/6/2023 It might even be worth going back and reading them again with the story from the prequels in mind. I think I like the prequels even more than the original duology because they explain the genesis of the society in the original books, and now those books make a lot more sense to me. That said, I really enjoyed the two prequel novels in the series – The Recovery and now The Epidemic – even more than the original two books. Young’s narratives are smooth and tight, the characters relatable and the pacing spot on for dystopian action/adventure/romance. Again, it’s not at all a criticism of the writing. In other words, in a narrative where the characters (and by extension the reader) can’t rely on anything being real, what’s the point of reading the story? I can’t say that Young’s books stray too far into that territory, but some of the earlier books in the series ( The Program and The Treatment), at least for my liking, came close. It’s a pet peeve of mine because the memory-loss trope can in some cases give the author license to change the rules a little too much during the story and pull the rug out from under the characters’ and the readers’ feet a little too often for my liking. I must admit to having a bit of a love-hate relationship with Suzanne Young’s The Program series, not because of the writing, but because I often have problems engaging with stories about memory manipulation.

Aaron becker author7/6/2023 When E was listing off books from her want-list for our request list for the library and mentioned Journey, my ears pricked up. Pool was one of our most-read books during the summer. If I asked nicely enough and didn’t make a big deal about it, EV would even “read” Pool to me. I took a turn reading it to her, and I noticed different facets of it than E, so my telling was a shade different. Sometimes she interjected to add something from a prior telling, others she inserted her own details. E kept making up the story of Pool, and EV began to interact with the story. Then, I watched something magic begin to happen. I was skeptical of it at first, recalling EV’s disinterest in Journey. Over the summer, E bought EV a wordless book called Pool. EV didn’t seem to love it, either. I took away that EV wasn’t excited about wordless picture books. I gave it a cursory page through and didn’t quite get it. Long before we had ventured to the library she was already cycling through books for EV every time she visited. The first time I encountered a wordless picture book for children was Journey at my mother’s house nearly a year ago.

Lisa kleypas suddenly you series7/6/2023 Suddenly You was originally published in 2001, and it’s easy to understand why it’s such a firm favourite with many. Kleypas’ backlist, Someone to Watch Over Me, uses one of the worst narrators I’ve ever heard, but that’s another story!) (I’m not so pleased that Tantor’s next foray into Ms. I was really pleased to see that some of Lisa Kleypas’ older, previously un-recorded/out of print titles are making their way into audio format, and even moreso when Suddenly You popped up at Audible with Beverley A.

Don Juan by Lord Byron7/5/2023 As a result he lacked discipline and a sense of moderation, traits he held on to his entire life. As a boy, young George endured a father who abandoned him, a schizophrenic mother and a nurse who abused him. A clubfoot from birth left him self-conscious most of his life. Early Life & Early Poemsīorn George Gordon Byron (he later added "Noel" to his name) on January 22, 1788, Lord Byron was the sixth Baron Byron of a rapidly fading aristocratic family. After leading an unconventional lifestyle and producing a massive amount of emotionally stirring literary works, Byron died at a young age in Greece pursuing romantic adventures of heroism. Hitty rachel field7/5/2023 The unique writing, plus life getting a bit in the way for both of us, made it a challenge to stay as connected with our reading as last time. Talk about a difference! Children’s literature has come a long way since this award originated. This time, we read Hitty: Her First Hundred Years the 1930 winner. Last year, we read When You Reach Me together, the 2010 winner. Both of us have struggled to read more of the older winners and decided a buddy read would help motivate us to start reading from the bottom of the list. This month, I participated in a Buddy Read with Jane Greenish Bookshelf. I am 20% complete with my Newbery reading goal for 2019 of 20 books read this year!Woohoo! One of the reasons I’ve made so much progress already is thanks to the support I’ve been receiving from both Captain Captain’s Quarters and Jane Greenish Bookshelf, both of whom are also working to read all Newbery Winners before the 100th is announced in January 2022. My Great Newbery Quest is off to a wonderful start for 2019. In 2018, I didn’t do a great job staying on top of reading Newbery Award winners.
